Understanding Sustainable Business And How We Can Achieve It.

The release of dangerous greenhouse gas emissions into our earth’s atmosphere is exacerbating climate change at an alarming rate. The repercussions of climate change are already being felt, and the continuation of our current practices will result in unpredictable weather patterns, and the potential for flooding, droughts, and high winds. With the global population forecast to grow to 9.7 billion by 2050, the combination of a volatile climate and a significantly increased population, will create global challenges to ensuring we have the resources needed to support our citizens.

For all the world’s inhabitants to not only survive but to thrive, we need to start living more sustainably. The term ‘sustainability’ can be used to indicate both a goal or a process and can be defined as ‘the capacity to support, maintain, or endure’. The responsibility of creating a more sustainable world does not lie only with governments and individual citizens; but businesses also have power and influence, and an obligation to play a part in tackling the climate crisis.

At Ogab®, we are aware that businesses have a responsibility to look beyond financial sustainability and consider the ‘three Ps’ of profit, people and planet, referred to as the ‘Triple Bottom Line’. ‘Planet’ refers to environmental sustainability – nature and natural resources, including ecological impacts, resource consumption, pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and waste, whilst ‘People’ refers to social sustainability, involving factors such as the health and well-being of people and communities. It is important for businesses to consider the environmental and social impact of the work they do and to explore how to both mitigate negative impacts and contribute to creating sustainable solutions.

At the World Economic Forum 2020, Professor Colin Mayer outlined that corporate purpose is ‘to produce profitable solutions to the problems of people and planet, and not to profit from producing problems for people and planet’. Considering this, at Ogab® we strive to create sustainable solutions. We know that the ‘energy’ sector, including electricity, heat, and transport, is responsible for 73.2% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Focussing on these sectors we specialise in creating performance enhancing, environmentally conscious solutions that improve existing technologies.

All our innovations are created with the vision of producing breakthrough technology which reduces the environmental impact of the transport and energy sectors; be that through lengthening life span of components, increasing efficiency, decreasing fuel consumption, or reducing emissions. At Ogab®, we are proud to use our expertise for good, and we know that there is still plenty more that can be done.

The Bruntland Report defined sustainable development as ‘development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs’. Businesses, governments, and international organisations all have a role to play in addressing the climate crisis and to ensure future generations can meet their needs. We believe that collaboration across industries and sectors, and vital investment into innovative research and development are fundamental to ensuring a more sustainable future, that is greener and fairer for all.

At Ogab®, we are always interested in potential collaborations with industry or university partners. To get in touch contact: info@ogab.co.uk or click here.
